THE PLEASANTVILLE METHODIST CHURCH QUILT - 1 of 3

The Church has always served as a social gathering place as well as a place to worship, especially for country farming  communities.  19th and early 20th century women church groups were known to raise funds in order to help build a new church, to purchase pews, windows, repairs, or additions to their church.  They would charge church members a nickle, dime or quarter to include their names on a signature quilt.  
I don't know if that's the case here.
But in 1893 work began on the fourth and a larger wooden church, 
completed and then dedicated in 1894.  
The Pleasantville Methodist Church Signature/Friendship Quilt was made from 1891 to 1892.  

There were 320 church members stitched onto the quilt with 48 additional names added after 1960.
